BRANCH
BRANCH Institute combines scientific research with the Restor platform, the SEED Biocomplexity Index and Restor Intelligence to bridge the gap between ecological evidence and decisions by governments, financial institutions and restoration practitioners. Its model seeks to make nature’s complexity measurable and economically visible, influence global policy and capital allocation, and ensure that restoration benefits reach local land stewards rather than reinforcing extractive or top-down approaches.
Systemic Lenses (Impact Approach)
Ecological BRANCH aims to improve how ecosystem health is measured by capturing biodiversity across genetic, species and ecosystem levels. The SEED Index is designed to move restoration beyond simple measures such as tree counts or species richness. This supports restoration approaches that prioritise resilient, biodiverse ecosystems and protection of existing natural systems.
Economic BRANCH sees biodiversity loss partly as a consequence of economic systems that fail to recognise the value and complexity of nature. Its datasets, SEED Index and Restor Intelligence aim to make ecological value more visible and usable in financial and policy decisions. This could help redirect capital from simplified, extractive models toward nature-positive restoration and stewardship.
Social The Global Inequality pillar connects ecosystem restoration with wealth distribution, poverty and local stewardship. BRANCH aims to ensure that restoration finance reaches rural land stewards, Indigenous communities and smallholder farmers rather than being captured primarily by external actors. It also recognises local knowledge and participation as important conditions for restoration initiatives to work and retain community trust.
Narrative / Belief BRANCH aims to shift the dominant restoration narrative from “plant more trees” toward stewardship, biocomplexity and regenerative feedback loops. Its public communication work seeks to make ecological restoration understandable and culturally compelling without reducing it to simplistic interventions. It frames hope and active participation as important drivers of systemic environmental change.
