eXo membranes

eXo membranes is a pre-seed deep-tech spin-off from KU Leuven that designs and manufactures highly robust epoxy-based membranes for treating complex industrial wastewaters and process streams (e.g., chemicals, metallurgy) currently dumped or incinerated. Beyond its ecological mission to enable a circular water economy, the company seeks to pioneer steward-ownership in the hardware sector, creating a replicable model for mission-locked, independent deep-tech enterprises that prioritize purpose over profit maximization.

Systemic Lenses (Impact Approach)

Ecological The technology directly addresses planetary boundaries by treating hazardous industrial wastewater to prevent pollution and enable water reuse, achieving up to 90% greater energy efficiency than conventional methods.

Economic By adopting steward-ownership, eXo challenges the paradigm of shareholder primacy, separating power from profit to ensure the company remains “perpetually independent” and focused on long-term value over extraction.

Social The founders aim to leverage their future market position to influence clients’ social policies and commit to inclusive hiring practices, while at the same time creating awareness about regenerative principles.

Narrative / Belief eXo seeks to shift the narrative of success in deep tech from the “unicorn” model to a resilient “zebra” archetype, proving that capital-intensive hardware companies can scale without compromising their regenerative mission.
