Introduction
In today’s complex world, two seemingly distinct goals – achieving better financial returns and driving systemic social or environmental change – actually share a fundamental common denominator: infrastructure. Whether we are looking at robust investment portfolios or transformative societal shifts, a strong foundation of infrastructure underlies success in both realms.
Infrastructure, in this context, goes far beyond roads and bridges; it includes the networks, systems, and institutions that connect people, information, and resources. This deep-dive explores why supporting and accelerating the development of various infrastructures is key to unlocking both superior financial outcomes and lasting systems change. We argue that by building the right foundations and enabling environments, we can catalyze emergent positive outcomes without needing to predict every detail of the future.
All the ingredients for progress – knowledge, capital, technology, and willpower – are already at our disposal; what’s missing is the connective infrastructure to bring a critical mass of actors together and build resilient networks for change.
In the following sections, we examine how infrastructure provides that missing link, serving as the bedrock upon which both economic returns and systemic impact can flourish, and why a modular yet logically connected approach to infrastructure development holds the key to our shared prosperity.
