Introduction
The challenge of interconnected problems:
Our societal and ecological challenges all come together in big, messy, intertwined systems. Focusing on isolated “point solutions” (e.g. swapping combustion cars for electric) often backfires. We see this happening in companies, but also in investment logic. Portfolios end up lacking synergy or even contain investments that undermine each other.
There’s a growing awareness and understanding that the best way to face these challenges is in a collaborative, holistic way. Recognizing that deeply connected problems can’t be solved in isolation and need systems-level approaches.
Our approach:
In this chapter we explore how AI, systemic metrics, and strategic alliancescan help us to navigate complexity. We’re learning by doing:
- Can we use AI to map (new) patterns that are too complex for our monkey brains?
- How can new metrics track deeper systemic change?
- Can we leverage existing alliances, combining forces to leverage impact while keeping personal agency?
All these tools help us in finding ways to understand, engage, and maybe even influence systems, rather than tinkering with parts. All with the shared goal of putting impact into play.
