4. A multilevel perspective
Another way to look at steward ownership is across three interconnected systems:
1. Company level
- Governance: who decides?
- Profit flows: where does value go?
- Succession: who takes over?
2. Capital level
- What kind of investors participate?
- What returns are expected?
- What time horizon is acceptable?
3. Ecosystem level
- Appropriate legal frameworks
- Cultural narratives —what does “ownership” mean?
- Availability of aligned capital
Steward ownership is not a single intervention. It is part of a complex, evolving ecosystem with many actors shaping outcomes. This matters: you don’t “implement” steward ownership in isolation. You participate in an emerging system.
