Why this chapter is in our Fieldbook

With the Explorers Club, we’ve been exploring how we can invest differently. Chapter 3 asked us to shift our inner place before deploying capital. Chapter 4 explored tools that help us navigate complexity. Chapter 5 questioned whether a “portfolio” even makes sense as a category. And Chapter 6 took us to the bottom of the iceberg: the narratives and power dynamics that quietly steer everything above them.
Exploring new concepts on narrative and power dynamics has been at the heart of our explorers club from day one. Several of our Explorers are actively questioning the power dynamics of investing itself: who decides, who benefits, and what capital does to a company once it’s inside.
Because changing ownership changes governance: decisions shift toward the people connected to the company (founders, employees, stakeholders..) instead of a party whose financial interest has little to do with the company itself.

And many impact investors around us share the same quiet disappointment: companies they believed in that somewhere along the way lost their impact-driven mindset. Not because the founders stopped caring. Because the structure stopped letting them.

This chapter asks something we’ve circled around but haven’t named directly yet: what if the ownership structure of a company is one of the deepest leverage points of all?
Ownership shapes incentives, defines power, determines time horizons, and ultimately decides whether purpose holds (or erodes) over time. It quietly steers strategy, innovation, and succession. It determines what kind of capital a company can accept, and on what terms. It is, to use Donella Meadows’ language, a paradigm-level lever: one of those deep design choices that reshapes everything above it.

To explore this topic, we invited in Peter Depauw, one of the leading practitioners of steward ownership in Belgium and beyond. He brings deep field expertise and a practitioner’s honesty. We bring the Explorer lens: our own portfolio cases, the investor’s journey from confusion to clarity, and the connections to our broader systemic work.
This is not a manifesto for one model. It’s the Explorers trying to understand ownership, with a deep dive into the lens we currently find most intriguing: “What if ownership itself could be designed in service of purpose?”
