Exercises for the Explorers Club

The Explorers Club trains systemic awareness through doing — through playing, moving, practising together. In the other chapters of this Fieldbook that happens through games and physical exercises. In this chapter it works differently: the practice material is the story itself. The narratives we carry, the fears disguised as virtues, the energy we habitually deploy and the energy we avoid — small shifts here bring large change to a system. And you can only discover that by paying attention to it, preferably together.
The three invitations below connect to the four quadrants that run through the entire Fieldbook. They ask for no right answers, only honest observation.

Invitation 1 — What story lies beneath your portfolio?

Quadrant: Seeing the system

Look at your investment practice and ask yourself what story lies beneath it. Is it predominantly masculine — linear, competitive, oriented toward arrival? Or is there also room for the other movement? What would change if you could deploy both consciously?

And a sharper version of the same question: do you know what your capital truly wants to return to? (The Hero’s Journey optimises for return without knowing what it is returning to.)

This is the work of Seeing the system — making visible what invisibly drives decisions. Most investment processes begin with strategy. This invitation begins one layer deeper: with the narrative that has already shaped the strategy before anyone sat down at the table.

Invitation 1 — Invitation 2 — Which fear is co-deciding?

Quadrant: Inner orientation & Values

Think of an investment decision you made — one you would have preferred to make differently in hindsight. What fear was at play? Did that fear look like discipline, carefulness, responsibility, engagement?

What would the situation have truly asked of you if you had recognised and acknowledged the fear beneath those virtues?

This is the work of Inner orientation & Values — and simultaneously of Unlearning & Meaning. For the patterns that limit us most are precisely the patterns we have come to regard as strengths. Dismantling them does not begin with willpower but with seeing.

Invitation 3 — Two conversations about the same question

Quadrant: Practising movement

Choose a project or question currently alive in your portfolio or team. Discuss it for fifteen minutes from the masculine: what is the problem, what is the solution, what do we do tomorrow? Write down the key sentences.

Then discuss it for fifteen minutes from the feminine: what is really going on, who is not being heard, what wants to be born here? Write down those key sentences too.

Compare the two conversations. What did you not see in the first? What did you not see in the second? What movement does this situation truly ask for?

This is Practising movement: not waiting for insight before acting, but letting insight arise through doing. The two conversations do not need to lead to a decision. They only need to be honest.
